My main reason for documenting these poems is so that I never forget that things that influenced who I later became. For me, this is less about the poem, and more about the friendship that led to the poem being written.

Winter 2021
Normally, winter in London Ontario is something to hunker down and get through. This year seems different. And I am not specifically referring to the pandemic or that we are locked down. What I am referring to is this year’s weather.
Mother Earth
Another poem from the “Nothing Book”. This was a journal I kept from age 18-22. I remember there was a couple of years in my teens, where creative surges pushed me to write down my thoughts.
Spiller Family versus the Spiders
When we chose to install video cameras to monitor our property, we were not sure what we expected to see. We were certainly not expecting an invasion of spiders…
Flashback Friday: An excerpt from the Nothing Book
I found this little gem of a poem in an old notebook (my Nothing Book) where I used to write down random thoughts and stories when I was a teenager. I somehow managed to keep that book since that time. Honestly, I had completely forgotten about it. When I re-read it, I recalled a memory…
End of an era
The day I had anticipated/dreaded for so many years finally came. On January 7th, after nearly 20 years with the different brands (FYI/ICI network, London Free Press, Canoe.ca, Bowes, Osprey, and Sun Media) of Quebecor Media, and, later, Postmedia, I finally got the proverbial tap on the shoulder. I was laid off. While initially this…
Spiller Family versus the Grizzly Bear
Day 1 was off to Lake Louise. Our first stop of the day was to go up the gondola (or rather chair lift) up the mountain at the Lake Louise Ski resort for a great view of the Ten Peaks Valley. Now, what is a restaurant in ski season is a nature interpretative centre with complimentary coffee the rest of the year. Here we learned about the local grizzly Bears.
Remember how you felt seeing your name printed in the Newspaper?

Or maybe later, it was in the high School when you were awarded an academic achievement that made the papers. Or perhaps, as a business person, your business was centered out for some community contribution. Whatever the reason, didn’t it feel great, just to know that your name if published in print for everyone to see. That is the magic of the community newspaper. Somehow, we overlook that when we talk about the future of newspapers.
Newspaper’s face reader apathy
It has become common for New Media experts to make their case that the time of Old Media — newspapers in particular — has past. Admittedly, newspapers are struggling with some big challenges: falling circulation rates; rapidly rising costs; low online revenues; and most importantly, a challenged business model. One new media story in particular…
